If The Walls Could Talk
Washington DC is the home to some of the most historical landmarks in America. Throughout my life, I have been blessed with multiple opportunities to visit our nation’s capital. I have always had an interest in American history and learning about the hard work and dedication that established our country. When visiting the White House Museum a few years prior, my mind wandered as I thought of all of the secrets, decisions, and history that happened within the White House building This is where I found inspiration for my design titled If The Walls Could Talk.
When illustrating this design, I wanted to combine silhouettes from multiple time periods to represents the continued years that the White House has been a symbol for our nation. I felt that it was important to incorporate past time periods when history was being made while also including modern elements due to the divide within our country during our present day. I decided to pick a mustard yellow woven fabric for the fishtail skirt to symbolize the plain walls of the White House. I then contrasted this fabric with a black striped pattern for the top. The stripes are hard to identify due to the remaining fabric also being black. This hidden pattern represents the thousands of conversations and issues that were discussed within the walls of the White House that the public knows nothing of.
